Just a few minutes’ drive from Lumby and South Milford, Bishop Wood is one of the area’s most popular destinations for walking and wildlife watching. Managed by Forestry England, this ancient woodland covers more than 340 hectares and offers a range of wide, flat trails that are suitable for families, cyclists and dog walkers.

Paths wind through oak, ash and sycamore trees, with several circular routes ranging from 30 minutes to two hours. There’s free parking at the Bishop Wood picnic site and plenty of picnic spots throughout. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a quiet walk among the trees, especially in spring and autumn when the colours are at their best.

2. Lumby to South Milford circular

This scenic 3.8-mile circular route links the neighbouring villages of South Milford and Lumby, offering a gentle walk through open farmland and rural backroads.

Starting from Lumby, the path heads out across the fields before looping through Lumby and returning to the village via peaceful country lanes. It’s an easy, family-friendly route that takes around 90 minutes to complete.

The route is largely flat, with great views across the surrounding countryside — and it’s an excellent option for dog walkers or those looking for a relaxed afternoon stroll close to home.

3. Ledsham to Fairburn Ings circular

A short drive north from Lumby brings you to the beautiful villages of Ledsham and Fairburn — and one of the most scenic circular walks in the region. The Ledsham to Fairburn Ings circular combines picturesque farmland paths with one of Yorkshire’s best nature reserves.

Starting in Ledsham village, follow quiet lanes and field paths to Fairburn Ings, a large RSPB reserve home to herons, swans, kingfishers and seasonal migrating birds. The walk is roughly 5 miles long and takes about two hours at a steady pace.

Once at Fairburn Ings, you can extend the route with one of the reserve’s shorter loops before returning to Ledsham. It’s a perfect mix of village charm and wildlife exploration, making it a must-visit for families and nature enthusiasts.

4. Monk Fryston to Hillam loop

This gentle circular walk connects the two neighbouring villages of Monk Fryston and Hillam — both known for their pretty stone cottages and village greens.

Starting near St Wilfrid’s Church in Monk Fryston, the route follows country paths and bridleways through open farmland, looping through Hillam before returning via quiet lanes. The full circuit is around 2½ miles and takes about an hour.

It’s a relaxed, family-friendly walk with the option to stop for a drink or meal at The Crown Inn in Monk Fryston or The Cross Keys in Hillam afterwards.

5. Towton Battlefield Trail

A short drive from Lumby, the Towton Battlefield Trail is one of Yorkshire’s most fascinating and atmospheric walks. This circular route explores the site of the Battle of Towton — fought in 1461 and known as one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the Wars of the Roses.

The trail begins at the Towton Battlefield car park near Saxton and covers around 4 miles, with interpretation boards explaining key points of the battle along the way. Expect open farmland, gentle inclines and sweeping views across the battlefield.

It’s a unique mix of history and scenery, perfect for walkers interested in Yorkshire’s medieval past — and it’s less than 10 minutes’ drive from Lumby.
